THE No. 1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY

Author: Alexander McCall Smith

The sign above hangs outside the office of the only female-owned detective agency in Botswana and introduces readers and clients to the fictitious detective agency "for the concerns of both ladies and others."

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series of mysteries by Alexander McCall Smith (himself an interesting character--see below), is the story of an enormously engaging detective who is drawn to her profession to “help people with problems in their lives.”

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, located in Gaborone, Botswana, specializes in everyday problems such as missing husbands, wayward daughters, con men and imposters. Its proprietor, an unlikely heroine, is the eminently sensible and delightfully cunning Precious Ramotswe, a cross between Kinsey Millhone and Miss Marple.

The series is not only entertaining but also explores conditions in Botswana in a way that is both light and penetrating.
