A NOTE ABOUT MAP SCALE:

Maps vary by scale (and usually detail). Select your maps based on the amount of detail you will need.

• Small scale maps cover a wider surface area, but in less detail. These maps are usually best for trip planning.
• Large scale maps cover smaller surface areas, but in greater detail. These maps are usually best for when you are actually on your way.

The terms small scale and large scale are, of course, subjective but, in broad terms, road maps and atlases are smaller scale; walking maps and city maps are larger scale.

But here's where it gets confusing: the larger the number the smaller the scale!
