The broad scope of this atlas is daring, but the publisher wisely states that it is "designed as a planning resource only-it is not a replacement for more detailed research once a choice of destination has been made." With that caveat in mind, this handsomely crafted publication tantalizes the prospective traveler with more than 750 photographs, beautiful full-color illustrations, and thematic maps that portray the world, continents, and regions with dramatically detailed, computerized terrain modeling. Regional maps include "What To See" and "Activities" boxes. The maps feature information on climate, population, land use, transport, standard of living, time zones, language, religion, and disease prevalence. The official flags of the world's nations, completely up to date, are accurately illustrated in their own section. A "Factfile" section-a valuable ready-reference tool in itself-includes a box for each of 193 independent countries and Antarctica, listing the time zone(s), dialing code, electrical voltage, side of road for driving, Internet ID code, area, population, capital, languages, currency, international drivers permits (IDP) and visa requirements (for U.S. citizens), tourist office web address, and climate with year-long tables for temperature and rainfall. There is also a vaccination chart for hepatitis A, typhoid, malaria, yellow fever, and meningitis...
