From the American Library Association:
It is with great pleasure that we announce the Unofficial Guides, published
by Wiley, as our best travel series for the year 2005. The introduction
to the Unofficial Guide to Mexico offers an explanation of the purpose of
the entire series: "we'll tell you what we think of tourist traps
and famous restaurants and accommodations how to stay off the beaten track,
and ways to spend less money on one thing so you can spend more on another." Now,
that does not mean that these guides are riddled with a supercilious, smirky,
way-too-cool attitude that in the end discourages tourists from attempting
to experience all the important things to see and do. Not at all. For
instance, in the guide to Washington, D.C., readers will discover a wonderfully
helpful set of "time-saving charts" that will help travelers prioritize,
to their own needs and interests, the slew of monuments and museums to be
found in our national capital. The restaurant profile in the Chicago
guide, presented in a very well ordered format, will be invaluable
to those travelers interested in the eating scene in this great heartland
city. Where appropriate, such as in the Chicago and Washington guides,
much space is devoted to the interests of the businessperson traveling to
that destination. And the guide to Maui has a chapter on going to that
island and getting married. In all, these are exciting, inviting guides
brimming with information not found so readily elsewhere.
