"A
map is the greatest of all epic poems. Its lines and
colors show the realization of great dreams."

Known for their detail and accuracy,
National Geographic maps represent exhaustive research,
include extensive detail, and make great use of color
and graphic originality.
National Geographic maps are printed
on paper and available either tubed or laminated.
Since the realization that the earth
is round, mapmakers have struggled with finding the
best way to show a round earth on a flat surface. The
most commonly used map projections are:
|
|
 |
 |
 |
| Mercator Projection |
Robinson Projection |
Winkel Tripel Projection |
| The Mercator projection has
straight meridians and parallels that intersect at right
angles. Scale is true at the equator or at two standard
parallels equidistant from the equator. |
The Robinson projection is based
on tables of coordinates, not mathematical formulas.
The projection distorts shape, area, scale, and distance
in an attempt to balance the errors of projection properties. |
The Winkel Tripel Projection
is a modification of the Robinson projection and was
developed to minimize distortion relative to shapes,
distances and perspective. |
|
Recently, the Society changed the projection of
their world map from the Robinson to the Winkel Tripel
projection. The new colorful maps include cities, landmarks,
rivers, and country information as well as Arctic and
Antarctic inset maps.
The world map is available in three
versions: Political, Physical and Satellite

The Political map is available in
three color combinations:

Bright Colors |
| Features of this map include subtle border coloring
on land, and prevailing winds and ocean currents at
sea. Separate insets show the north and south polar
Regions, world vegetation and land use, and world
population density. |
This political map shows physical topography on
land and under the oceans. The color scheme is styled
like antique maps of centuries ago but the borders
and country names are quite current. |
While this is a political map it nevertheless shows
physical topography on land and under the oceans.
National boundaries are emphasized and rich, contrasting
colors clearly delineate each country. |

| Wall
Mural (three sheets), 76" x 110" |
| It may be the most impressive
National Geographic ever made. The classic map of
the world is enlarged to extraordinary mural size,
where 1 inch represents 206 miles. |
 |
| Three durable, self-adhering,
latex-coated panels that hang like wallpaper combine
to dramatically fill a 110'' x 76'' space. Complete
with attachment instructions. |

| The
physical map highlights the Earth's land and undersea
forms with hand-painted relief and includes two inset
maps depicting the Earth's crust and world climatic
zones. |
The satellite map is the
most accurate map of Earth's surface and is produced
from satellite data. The computer-generated composite
map draws from more that 500 images to give one-kilometer
detail and consistent representation of natural colors. |
