Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is the nonprofit record label of the Smithsonian Institution. Dedicated to supporting cultural diversity and increased understanding among peoples through the world, Folkways' mission is the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of sound.to document "people's music," spoken word, instruction, and sounds from around the world. The collection is contiually expanding.

With every purchase comes the documentation that explains not just the sounds but their circumstances -- their who, what, when and why. You listen against the history of a genre or an instrument or an artist, enter a real of sound and settle in, till what at first may be foreign in time becomes familiar.

Many of the CDs are not accompanied by the originial album cover as some of them are produced only one or two copies at a time and the covers are not as readily reproducible.
