CHRISTMASPHERE PEACE ON EARTH
Acrylic Glass
3" 2.5"
Silk-screened by hand, this sphere provides the look of glass with the strength and durability of acrylic. It presents festive red and green land masses, white names, and gold latitude and longitude markings. This is an accurate reference tool, showing the names of over one-hundred cities, continents, and bodies of water. The maker of the original of this globe is unknown to us but the globe is a treasure.  From this reproduction you can see the world through the eyes of Renaissance navigators and scientists. Imagine sailing the oceans and coming upon unknown lands, disembarking at undiscovered coastlines. Imagine what exotic cultures exist beyond the ports of call. Discover the Spice Islands. Sail to distant Cathay where the streets are reputed to be paved with gold. Bring back charts and knowledge for the cartographers in Amsterdam and London who accomplished amazingly accurate maps. Was California an island. Was New Holland a continent? Find the trade winds. Discover an ancient world full of mysteries and the unknown. Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) is best known for the first use, in 1569, of the map projection bearing his name. He was a prolific publisher of maps and atlases, but is known to have produced one version of a globe pair: a terrestrial globe in 1541 and a matching celestial globe in 1551.

TERRESTRIAL GLOBE

This is a nearly 500-year-old document of early trade, discovery and exploration and shows the world through the eyes of a 16th-century traveller and explorer.

CELESTIAL GLOBE

Newly invented instruments led astronomers to discover previously unknown stars and constellations. Named and drawn as mythological figures, they ruled the heavens of the era.
