Cartographers have used compass roses for centuries to illustrate the orientation of the cardinal directions on maps, north, east, south and west. This Compass Rose globe features a three-dimensional compass rose as the model's base. The stand holds a die-cast semi-meridian which frames the 12-inch diameter globe. While compass roses serve a mostly practical purpose, they have also become highly decorative. The brass-plated base of this globe is designed for ornamentation, but the map itself contains lavish, antique-styled compass roses that serve more functional purposes.
The political map has a parchment style ocean. Countries are embellished in faded, earth-toned colors. Finely-lettered old-fashioned script designates the contemporary place names, and small drawings of early explorer's sailboats populate the beige oceans. In addition to the stylish compass roses on the map, the world globe also features cartouches and legends.
