Whoever said that North must be up? This map challenges
the basic notion of "up" and "down."
This Africa-centered map, a Van der Grinten projection,
challeneges some rather common assumptions: that
the North Pole is at the top of the world and the United
States is at the center of the world.
This map shows the poles reversed from the traditional
view with the South Pole at the top and North Pole at
the bottom. Australia and South America appear near
the top while Iceland, Greenland and Canada are near
the bottom. It also shows Africa/Europe at the center
of the world rather than the more traditional perspective
we get from maps available in the United States where
the United states is the center of the world.
This is a great way to shake people up and help them
question their assumptions.
